Welcome to studiowhat.

What?

We'll explain why what in a minute. But first, here's what's what. We are artists turned designers turned teachers turned artists doing design and some teaching. Studiowhat is where we work, perched on a sometimes sunny hillside between Kingston and Indianola, Washington, across the Puget Sound from Seattle. What do we do? We work and play with our drawings, paintings, sculpture, jewelry, ceramics, graphic design, web design and whatnot.

whywhat?

There is a story, of course. It goes like this.

I am a painter, a painter of certain ambiguity. More precisely, rigorous ambiguity. This kind of painting leaves me at a loss for a tag-line and we all know we need tag-lines. How else would anyone know what we do? So Linn, my wife, helped me out coining the brilliantly open phrase painter of what. So...tag-line assigned, the studio could be nothing other than studiowhat.

whatwebdesign

Web where-with-all with what

Designers of some...mmm...maturity, we still have non-photo blue pencils, a few sheets of Zipatone and Letraset. We might have forgotten how to spec type and produce tidy mechanicals, but we remember Photoshop before layers. In other words, whatwebdesign from studiowhat is steeped in the basics. Tools and styles change, thus we have traded in our Rubylith for CSS, our Bestine for php. But we all know, it's not the tools, it's the what that matters and how it is delivered.

whatup

Upstairs at studiowhat, is the Painter of What.

If we tried to explain, we would have to change the name... and then what a shame it would be to have to hunt for another suitable tag-line.
